How to Improve Typing Speed: 7 Practical Tips

A short, practical guide to getting faster and more accurate, whether you are preparing for an exam or just want to type better.

1. Accuracy first, speed second

In most typing exams a wrong word costs more than a slow word, because mistakes are deducted from your net speed. Slow down until you type cleanly, then build speed gradually.

2. Learn touch typing

Keep your fingers on the home row and use all ten fingers. Looking at the keys caps your speed. If it feels slow at first, that is normal and it pays off within a few weeks.

3. Fix your posture

Sit upright, keep your wrists level and your shoulders relaxed. Tension makes you slower and tires you in long sessions.

4. Keep a steady rhythm

Even keystrokes beat fast bursts followed by corrections. Aim for a smooth pace you can hold for the full exam time.

5. Practice a little every day

Fifteen to twenty minutes a day works better than one long weekly session. Use a timed typing test once or twice a week to measure progress.

6. Review your mistakes

After each test, look at the words flagged as wrong. Type those words several times. Patterns show up quickly, such as swapped letters or a weak finger.

7. Warm up and use your exam keyboard

Spend a minute warming up before a test. If you will type in Hindi, practice with the same keyboard layout you will use in the exam. Try the UPSI English or UPSI Hindi practice tests.
